If you’ve been online recently, you’ve likely seen amazing examples of AI-generated images based on text prompts. But what if these images could be created instantly, as you type?

At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Mediatek showcased their impressive AI demos, including the SDXL Turbo AI engine. This engine can dynamically create images in real time based on text prompts.

I had the chance to try it out, and the image changed instantly as I typed. I started with “red,” and a red tapestry appeared. When I added “cat,” the image immediately switched to a reddish cat. Whatever I typed next, a usable rendering appeared almost immediately.

Samsung’s Galaxy 24 Ultra also has AI-based wallpaper generation, but Mediatek’s demo creates images even faster, as you type.

Another demo showed an AI-generated video from a text prompt. While not instant, it took about 30 seconds for the video to appear. It’s easy to imagine that we’ll soon be able to “direct” our own videos by typing in what we want to see, with the AI generating results fast enough to appear instantaneous.

These demos used the latest generation of APU (AI Processing Unit) hardware in Mediatek’s Dimensity 9300 smartphone chip. Mediatek claims the demos ran entirely on-device, meaning this technology could soon be available on widely available smartphones.
